“What was odd, the source said, was that the money in the account—hundreds of millions of dollars—had come from a bank in Azerbaijan. Most importantly, Kushner appeared to have transferred significant amounts of money from the Dubai account to other individuals, including a warlord, a mercenary, and a one-time hit man,” Cole wrote.
Cue the tariffs. Technically it was a Russian hacker that did the spying, the AIVD was along for the ride. What's more interesting is what they found on there, which is probably only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the kind of leverage the Russians seem to have over Trump & Co.
This title seems inaccurate, given other reporting, that it was the Russians who hacked the phone and the Dutch got a copy of the contents from a Russian spy paid enough

The Russian spy gave access to the GROe server, where a copy of the contents lived. Later on, in the beginning of 2018, the MIVD got direct access to the phone.
Cue the tariffs, sure. But I'm curious about the part verdverm mentions, where the Dutch got a copy of the phone's contents from a Russian spy. How does that even work? I'd guess someone got paid a lot.
It's roughly the same way that Russian grey zone warfare works in Europe: hire a disposable asset and pay them to commit arson and other forms of sabotage. Disloyalty is well trodden ground for the Russians.

The original Vanity Fair piece is worth a read.

All powers spy on each other, including supposedly friendly ones. I would have thought this was a well known thing.

Yes, yes we did.
We have to, because the USA clearly has shown it is no-one's ally.
They are fistdeep everywhere, so don't complain about other fingers.
And as long as it seems America has been infiltrated to the highest level by Russia, then we also don't even have a choice in doing so.

Cope harder.
Well, someone's got to.
