    > We needn’t be so hard on Americans. As the Cameroonian historian Achille Mbembe has noted, the West at large has foreclosed on the idea of any world to come or any imagined future. Exit is impossible, he winks in French; the longue durée is a dead idea.

Right, lets trust a Cameroonian historian (lol) to decide that the West has come to an end.

It is sometimes hard to see things clearly when you are invested in the outcome. Not that your skepticism is not warranted. Still, I should not that decline of the west are not some sort of weird and recent concept. There are a fair amount of books that cover the subject including some fairly often quoted ones comparing US to Rome.

He might be an African, but even Africans know that very little comes from America.

No African is going to tell you they want an American car over a German. Continue this across other physical stuff and none of them come from America.

He would understand Big Tech is very rich, but he also knows that hardly helps all the other millions of Americans.

It's always edifying to see where these slanted thumbsucking thinkpieces originate.

I'm not, of course, talking about the Poundland quality brit academic who nominally wrote it; but rather, who paid for it. Let's see...ah.

    Predictable.

For the peasant, past good, future bad. The future is the thing you prevent. Acceptance (leave aside advocacy) of change is a crime. And if Americans are leading the backward charge, China is also stretching a powerful elastic anchored in the Ming. Technology has outrun evolution, and that cannot stand.
