Well DHH launched Rails and he owns this Rails Word conference so it's not too surprising he gave the opening keynote.
As he's no longer interested in Ruby or Rails, or at least by his own admission he's retired from programming, perhaps he'll do the decent thing and just step aside for more interested speakers to take over.
Aaron is a breath of fresh air, which is amazing considering he's been doing it for so long and so consistently.
Interesting. I didn't know if youtube started doing this for all videos, but this one shows only "featured" comments by default, so most of the negative ones are hidden.
Shopify uses Ruby extensively and I don't think they are considering moving away from it (at least I am not aware of anything).
As a consequence, they have made lots of contributions and improvements to Ruby infrastructure. That includes two JIT compilers (YJIT and ZJIT) and a new parser.
FWIW, he even riffs on his own boss when referencing the "slop grenades".
Aaron is exactly what you want in a community leader.
He's consistency both technical and funny. Plus he seems like a decent bloke overall (based on meeting him once in passing 15 years ago).
