Well, until it became clear it was literally unsustainable. Greg Abbott is as pro-business as they come, but even he cannot conjure up electricity out of thin air. It's just a question of numbers, not opinion. Texas doesn't have enough power, so that's that.
There’s literally a commercial featuring Abbot defending data center buildouts and saying how good they are for communities running right now. Like today.
Big deal hearing it from a Texas GOP governor who's usually in lock step with the Trump administration. Texans must really hate these things across the political spectrum.
The polling must have shown a vulnerability - Democrats in Texas (and a few MAGA like Sid Miller) were hammering GOP on this issue until Abbott finally changed his tune. Texas voters hate it more than pedophiles cause Ken Paxton mismanaged a bunch of those cases resulting in lenient plea deals that didn’t make a dent in Paxton support earlier this year, and he won the GOP statewide primary. He probably will win the general election but here’s hoping against it.
You can tell more about him by keeping an eye on what goes into his wallet. He's gotten millions in donations/bribes from companies who want to profit from data centers. He's not letting them down.
Not internalizing the costs of increased electricity consumption was an own goal.

One.
Lawl, that's rich -- the buildout happened under his watch.
He cozied up to them until public opinion turned against data centers

Popular opinion is at a fever pitch, but many municipalities have put in moratoriums that expire a few days or weeks after the election.
This isn't going anywhere.

> Texas voters hate it more than pedophiles
I'm not sure if this is a very strong statement, most of them voted for Trump after all.
Abbott will suddenly be in favor of deregulating all data center construction by December. He has a track record on this.
Greg Abbott has a long tradition of about-facing ahead of reelection. Ignore anything that comes out of his mouth until after November.
