As a Puerto Rican with plenty of family still there I would rather we just fix the issues before someone just leaves the island to fend for itself without a fighting chance. Right now we still have a weird benefit of being American, one thought a relative shared with me, it would be a great time for CORCO to come back and start refining Venezuelan oil, this could boost the local economy of the island drastically.
Crime is also insanely rampant on the island. It got to the point they changed the laws around owning guns so law abiding citizens can conceal carry.
Personally, I would much rather fix the issues there first. The other elephant in the room is the power grid, some people have wanted it privatized, and that finally happened in 2021 and continued in 2025, though I would like to see more companies in that space, maybe even see towns have their own grids ultimately, but the government still owns all the equipment as far as I know.
Mind you, when Puerto Rico had a better economy it was #1 at production quality, above Japan and the US, this all kind of faded after the tax incentives for having your business there went away, Puerto Rico does incentivize lax taxation for companies that choose to migrate to Puerto Rico on the other hand.
Fun fact, if your income is locally sourced in Puerto Rico, you pay no income tax for it to the US, you still pay for Social Security / Medicare though.
Puerto Rico refining more oil makes too much sense when you look at a map and see where oil flows through by boat, Puerto Rico is at the heart of all those paths throughout the Caribbean.
It's beyond time to grant Puerto Rico it's independence, this vestige of colonialism has to end.
