it wont be stopped and it wont be pretty. AI in warzones and to target populations is here and here to stay.
the first effective use in my mind was turkish drones swarms between azerbijan and armenia. (used ML, not LLMs afaik)
very soon it will be doing the things humans are 'uncomfortable' with. the things that traumatize the humans when they do it. that is what they will replace, and that is exactly not the kind of thing u want to replace. It will make war and killing an effortless and thoughtless game. Today the only problem is to find the people to do the killing, its getting less popular as a job option and mandatory drafts face more resitance. soon that problem is solved by autonomous/unmanned systems driven and directed by AI.
some suits who've never seen a casualty of war or a broken family with missing members will direct them... tyranny will rain down more and more on the common people of the earth. like we see now in gaza and ukraine, but far wider spread.
the (illegal) drone wars have already been done since atleast Obama times, people saw it, pointed at it and it continues. As will War-AI.
Worst of all, it will prevent further learning in this area for humans. It will be less likely humans will learn war is not the way. One side is blinded by their own tools while the other is blinded by fear and suffering.
