The PhD degree process is archaic--it's basically indentured servitude. Change that, and PhD applications will skyrocket.
The academic job market is flooded. No PhD's could be produced for 10 years and it would still be flooded.
Not a Problem.
In the physical sciences at least, there are also corporate jobs.
