I'm just going to leave this here.

    https://xmpp.org/

It has been a mistake to build our society around WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and other non-free software. Stallman was right, as usual.

I've been using XMPP for the past month or so and it's quite shocking to realize that we now have E2E encrypted audio and video calls that run on software that's Free and federated.

I find https://getsession.org/ and it's Tor-like routing of messages quite interesting.

The fact that I can't ctrl-F license immediately makes me skeptical.

You can use XMPP via Tor as well.

GPL-3.0 on the Github. Also based in Switzerland for what that's worth.

Also, the problem with Tor is that people in the UK believe that the only people who use Tor are looking for child abuse (websites). Consider this to be a form of brainwashing by the government/Police.

Because of this, there's a stigma regarding the use of, since people claim that "The UK is not a dictatorship, so why would anyone need to use it?"

            There's SOGS, which is also GPL-3.0. https://github.com/NightSommelier/session-sogs

You can just make a group within the client, though.

The clients are GPL3. What about the servers? Can I operate a server myself and it integrates with the rest of the network?

Labour is building the machinery of total surveillance, the fascist government which follows will be most grateful.
