I hope the Bundeswehr was given advance warning; this is the kind of situation that leads to violence like the Battle of Brisbane[0].

I hope this isn't true. Not only is it wrong it would be so embarrassing.

      It's true.

edit: they have removed it in the minute since I posted this comment?

Archive.org still has it (see the section at the bottom "Running list of German support organizations for your kit bags"): https://web.archive.org/web/20251105103925/https://home.army...

We're not abysmally embarrassed yet when it comes to NATO?

      • FridayoLeary 6 hours ago

What that you've been paying for most of it while the rest of us freeload? You should be proud. In Britain the army is the smallest it's ever been. It's time Europe takes their military obligations seriously.

        • Zigurd 6 hours ago

America would pay a pretty high price were Russia to dominate Europe. That's a fair point regarding the UK. Poland has always understood the assignment, and this year Germany got on board.

Ivan isn't 10 feet tall either.

In the age of drone warfare, does Britain even need a lot of young men? The half-life of a grunt seems pretty short in eastern Ukraine at the moment.

        • IAmBroom 6 hours ago

          Both can be true.

Most of NATO underdelivers on their payments.

And the US treats its active military like cattle... Oops, forget that. Cattle aren't put on cheap diets.

Why wouldn’t it be true? You know they’re not getting paid right? Theres some tiff around tax cuts for the wealthy or healthcare for the poor.

richest country in the history of the world, everybody

    • IAmBroom 6 hours ago

Where only the middle class and up can afford health care... which itself is not ranked anywhere near "best that money can buy", somehow.

We should really replace our country's motto, e pluribus unum, with the far more accurate caveat emptor.

Someone in the Pentagon should quickly get the presidential crayon kit and send the Secretary of War a pretty hand-drawn picture why this is bad on the PC Venezuela Signal Group.

I am not sure the Secretary knows the difference between Warrior Spirit and Warrior Spirits, which is, probably to his surprise no hard liquor brand, but the soul that leaves the body after your soldiers starved to death or died from embarrassment, having to fight over scraps with Ukrainian refugees and poor and/or old German people at a local food bank.

For the old KGB Russians like Putin, this must be amazingly joyful to see. American Soldiers are advised to go to Food Banks, while the Commander-in-Chief could easily feed the whole army steak dinner for two months straight, flown in in his newly gifted private 747, with what he made in Crypto only during the first half of 2025.

It's a failure of congress to do their job. You can paint it as a narrative of Democrats standing up for the American people, but in most legislatures failing to pass a budget leads to new elections. If their job was on the line they would sort it out quickly. Something has to happen eventually. There's no advantage to be gained for voters for the thing to be dragged out one week vs 36 days and counting.

    • atmavatar 2 hours ago

Reminder: while the Democrats are trying to signal they have some power to resist, the truth is that the Republican party can end the filibuster rule today and pass whatever budget bill they like without requiring a single Democrat vote.

They had no problem carving out an exception to the filibuster rule when pushing through district court judges and later Supreme Court justices without Democrat support, so they can't even argue that they consider the filibuster sacrosanct: they don't.

This government shutdown is exclusively a problem of Republican making.

If this is true, would be pretty big news about readiness.

I've been assuming the military would be last department to be cut.

      > If this is true

      It's posted on army.mil

      > Running list of German support organizations for your kit bags

      > Tafel Deutschland: The umbrella organization distributes food to people in poverty through its more than 970 local food banks. You can find your nearest food bank on their website. https://www.tafel.de/

Edited 10 minutes after posting: the section about food banks is currently not in the page linked above, but my quote above was taken from it at the time I first visited.

      • FrustratedMonky 7 hours ago

        This is shocking.

Surely there is some relevant quote about what happened to past empires that could no longer feed the troops.

If it means they don't support the cheeto in a coup, it might even be a good thing.

Minutes until he blames Joe Biden: 15.

Minutes until he even believes it: same.

    • more_corn 6 hours ago

It’s not being cut. Military employees are not getting paid because congress is fighting about funding healthcare for people who don’t have insurance provided by their job. Like farmers and uber drivers and grocery clerks.

Should any enlisted personnel be looking for a new career, I understand there's a fully funded paramilitary group operating right here at home.
