    It seems likely that survivors of the asteroid event would be broadly spread across 'lucky' ecosystems that weren't utterly destroyed. Maybe not so much about the creature or it's genetics? More about what pockets of temperate life-nurturing geography remained.

      These lizards are insectivores, so I imagine they could have been preadapted to live in a detritus-powered ecosystem immediately after an impact when photosynthesis had been severely affected.
