    Gage blocks are a key enabler of Henry Ford's mass production system. The ability to rapidly combine blocks to make precise measurement possible obsoleted the need to transport and maintain a large number of "master gages" of each and every component of a product, all of which would be needed to check or re-sent a production line.

    Gage blocks are magic as far as I'm concerned, I hope to own a set of NIST traceable blocks some day.
